Queen Mary 2
Queen Mary 2, or QM2 as she is affectionately known, is Cunard Line's flag ship and arguably the grandest ocean liner ever built. Since her launch in 2004 when she was named by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, she has been voted "Best Luxury Ship" by readers of Travel Weekly magazine each year. She combines the most modern amenities with the refined, sophisticated ambience for which Cunard is known.
With her unique design as an ocean liner, Queen Mary 2 is able to glide through the waves as you cross the Atlantic, while you enjoy the amenities onboard.
On a Transatlantic Crossing you may have seven or more days and nights. Here are some of the things you can do during the day - and all are included in your cruise fare, unless otherwise indicated.
A few options for a day on Queen Mary 2:
Queen Mary 2 Canyon Ranch SpaClub Spa & Fitness Centre
The first Canyon Ranch SpaClub at sea offers 20,000 square feet of pampering on two levels, with a wide selection of massages, facial and body treatments, an extensive relaxation room with beautiful views across the ocean and a marvelous AquaTherapy Centre, where you can soak in warm water, soothe your back and shoulders under a refreshing waterfall, and enjoy a variety of steam room and saunas. (Use of the fitness centre is complimentary. Of course, spa treatments incur an additional charge, and access to the SpaClub can be purchased on a daily or duration-of-the-cruise basis.)
For some, relaxation is all about a good book and a quiet corner. Well, the Library onboard Queen Mary 2 provides over 8,000 titles: the largest collection at sea! Sit down in one of the comfortable arm chairs in front of one of the big windows looking over the bow of the ship and delve into your book or magazine. The bookshop next door offers the perfect present for bibliophiles, Cunard and Queen Mary 2 souvenir books, post cards and other souvenirs.
Illuminations - Planetarium
In the only Planetarium at sea, you can see special cosmic shows created just for Cunard that are projected on a massive dome. Learn about the creation of the universe, soar along the skies and see the stars above the Atlantic - all from the comfort of your theatre seat. Illuminations is also a venue for Cunard's renowned Cunard Insights lectures and other presentations.
Cunard Insights Enrichment Programme
Cunard's award-winning enrichment program brings you engaging presentations, interesting lecturers and unforgettable classes. Meet speakers from a wide variety of backgrounds, including astronauts, authors, marine historians, actors, therapists, royalty experts and enjoy their insight.
Queens Room - Ballroom Dancing
Make good use of the largest dance floor at sea and prepare yourself for Cunard's famous Royal Balls during a ballroom dance class. Brush up on your waltz or cha-cha, or learn the salsa or line dancing with the ships qualified dance teachers.
On most days, you'll find a live orchestra or band playing music so you can dance the night away. On select voyages, Cunard's gentleman hosts will gladly take single ladies for a spin on the dance floor.
Maritime Quest Exhibit
Cunard's heritage on full display: that is the Maritime Quest. Throughout the ship you will find exhibits on 10 "pathways" that explain Cunard's part of seafaring history. You'll learn about the company's history, its celebrity and royal passengers, life onboard for the crew and the wide variety of Cunard ships since the companies founding.
Looking for a "souvenir" of your crossing? Visit an exquisite collection of boutiques offering such fashionable names as H. Stern, Hermes, Chopard and Escada. Sorry - purchases are in addition to your cruise fare...
Traditional English Afternoon Tea
All this activity is sure to spark your appetite, so you may have to just join your fellow-passengers in the Queens Room for traditional white glove service British Afternoon Tea. Enjoy this classic experience every afternoon in the Queens Room, or on deck if the weather is nice.
Cunard ConneXions Computer Centre
Find courses ranging from foreign languages to software programs or use the Internet access to stay in touch with friends and family. (Additional charges apply for Internet access and some courses.)
Golden Lion Pub, Boardwalk Cafe and Other Dining Options
While away the afternoon hours in an authentic British Pub: the Golden Lion. Enjoy a traditional lunch of fish and chips, play darts or sip a pint of English ale. (Meals are generally complimentary, beverages are not.) If the weather is nice, sit in the sun at the Boardwalk Cafe for a casual lunch. Of course, the Kings Court is open for breakfast and lunch too.
When the weather is nice, enjoy one of the outdoor swimming pools on the aft of the ship, overlooking the wake. But this is the Atlantic, so if it is cloudy, enjoy the indoor pool and whirlpools.
There is so much to do on Queen Mary 2: art auctions, cooking demonstrations, an art gallery of famous masters, lecturers, first-run films, bridge and a golf simulator with 51 of the world's best courses.
But sometimes it is just nice to do nothing at all - just lounge in the privacy of your suite or stateroom, or find a comfortable spot in one of the many areas of the ship and watch the waves.... Life is good!
